Maung Zarni, a visiting research fellow at Oxford University, said both nations could do more in trying to persuade the Myanmar junta to allow international aid workers and equipment into the country.

China and India are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which Zarni called “a total disaster” for the same reason.

“The latest episode involving the junta’s handling of the cyclone victims in Burma really calls into question the meaning and the usefulness, the value of ASEAN,” he added.

The organization of 10 nations promotes economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region.

“China isn’t doing its share of heavy lifting, and the same can be said about India as well,” Zarni said.

India has no favourites in Nepal: outgoing envoy

India’s outgoing ambassador Shiv Shankar Mukherjee has said that New Delhi has “no favourites” among political players in Nepal and that it played an “impartial” role in the recent elections. He also said that he had no contact with King Gyanendra after April 2006 and India had no role to play in his future or that of the monarchy. It was something for the representatives of the people of Nepal to decide, he said.

Mukherjee was witness to momentous changes, including a coup by King Gyanendra in 2005, the laying down of arms by the Maoists and, finally, the holding of the historic Constituent Assembly election that is expected to end Nepal’s 239-year-old monarchy.

Jet taps fast-rising Thai-India demand

Jet Airways, which bills itself as India’s premier international airline, is moving to tap booming Indo-Thai air traffic by launching its third link between the two countries early next month.

Daily service will begin on May 7 between Bangkok and Mumbai, its home base, using a Boeing 738-800 jetliner that can carry up to 144 passengers.

The launch will give Jet a total of 21 weekly flights including those on its Bangkok-Delhi and Bangkok-Calcutta routes.

The number of air travellers between Thailand and India soared to 1.47 million last year from only 325,374 in the previous year, according to Gerry Oh, Jet Airways’ regional vice-president for Southeast Asia.

Travel is surging in line with impressive growth in two-way commercial activity including tourism, buoyed by India’s rising economic power.

The four Indian cities with the highest traffic volume are New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Bangalore, respectively.

A SOUTH Australian father and daughter who made world headlines after showing television audiences the child they conceived together had another baby seven years ago, who died from a congenital heart defect, court transcripts reveal.

John Earnest Deaves, 61, and Jennifer Anne Deaves, 39, told Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes they fell in love in 2000 when they “discovered each other later in life”.

The pair claim it was after meeting each other for just the third time in 31 years that they formed an attraction, ended their marriages and moved in together along with the daughter’s two children, aged nine and 14.
